“It is not every day you see a bishop leading the faithful in procession through the streets of a major city”

Hundreds join pro-life procession through streets of San Diego

News from the Trenches

On Sunday, Jan. 20, more than 700 faithful gathered at San Diego’s St. Joseph’s Cathedral for prayer and a procession to condemn 35 years of legalized abortion in the United States. The procession was led by Auxiliary Bishop Salvatore Cordileone, and was blessed with the presence of the famous International Pilgrim Virgin Statue of Our Lady of Fatima.

Thomas McKenna, president of Catholic Action for Faith and Family, organized the event. He called it a “Procession of Reparation” to decry the Jan. 22 anniversary of the 1973 Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion in the United States.

McKenna said that the infamous anniversary coincided with the three week tour of the statue he had organized for the diocese in January, so he tied the two together. “In the past 35 years more than 48 million children have been killed in their mother’s womb and the message Our Lady gave at Fatima in 1917 spoke of this type of extreme moral decay,” he said. “At Fatima the Blessed Mother asked for prayer and reparation, and that is what we did.”

In the early afternoon people gathered in the cathedral where the Fatima Statue was displayed. As the choir intoned hymns, the faithful filed out onto the street. Some of the participants stayed in the cathedral in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament, which was exposed on the main altar.

The procession stretched over three city blocks, with the Fatima statue carried aloft by four men. As they walked, the people prayed the rosary in unison and chanted hymns. A police escort stopped traffic at intersections as the faithful walked just over a mile to the Family Planning Associates abortion center located across the street from San Diego’s Balboa Park.

At the park, people gathered on the lawn across the street from the clinic for a brief addresses by Bishop Cordileone and Mr. Kent Peters, director of the diocesan office of Social Ministry. After the bishop gave his episcopal blessing, the procession returned to the cathedral along the same route.

“It is not every day you see a bishop in beautiful liturgical vestments, with miter and crosier, leading hundreds of the faithful in procession through the streets of a major city in our country,” commented Sue Lopez of Helpers of God’s Precious Infants, who leads weekly prayer vigils at the clinic. “It was very inspiring, a day to be remembered,” she said. The presence of many religious in their habits added to the solemnity of the day.

Upon arriving at the cathedral, people filled the pews and sang the Salve Regina as the beautiful statue entered the church, led by the bishop and a color guard escort from the Knights of Columbus. With Our Lady beside the altar and the Blessed Sacrament exposed in the monstrance, the bishop delivered a very inspiring meditation followed by benediction.

As the bishop slowly walked out of the cathedral blessing the faithful along the way, the church was filled with voices singing Holy God We Praise Thy Name, and tears could be seen in the eyes of many.

Wonderful. You would never see something like this in the diocese of Fresno.

God bless Bishop Cordileone. So, is there any chance he will be promoted to, say, FRESNO when Bishop Steinbock's term is up? Or will we just have to suffer through another one of Cardinal Mahony's auxiliaries?

Bishops who lead by example are far to few, if they only realized how hungry Catholic"s are to have our Bishops stand up for the Teachings of Jesus Christ, to fight back against the sodomites, the democrats culture of death and sodomy platform, planned parenthood and all the others satanic driven organizations. We will follow them, the Churches will be filled again. How sad that there are so few, but thank God we have websites that are trying hard to be true to our Faith and give us these glimmers of hope that real change is on the way. About the only time most of ever hear from our Bishops is that monthly letter looking for money, they should be on TBN schilling their causes like Benny Hinn. Hope the USCCB Bishops does not chastise this good Bishop, supporting pro-life in an election year may not go over to well with the far left wing of the Catholic Church demoncrats.

What a fabulous example of spiritual fatherhood by a successor to the Apostles! A living example always spurs conversions.

I too am glad to see a bishop leading his flock this way. But, why do we choose to cut down and attach the bishop of Fresno instead of pray for him? Charity must be remembered. He is a successor of Peter. Love him and pray for him. Don't just attack.

We in San Diego are SO grateful for Bishop Cordileone. For one thing, he is never afraid to publicly defend life. His example goes beyond the realities of administrative tasks, and dare I say farther than a loose concept of being 'pastoral'. I agree with Fr. M.P that Bishop Cordileone leads as a spiritual father, and may God strengthen him in that very necessary role.

Just another thought about criticizing Bishop Steinbock. Of course criticism can be constructive. But do you think it is healthy to contrast bishops in a public forum, especially considering Bishop Steinbock wasn't even mentioned in the article? It could foster division not only between laity and bishops, but among the bishops themselves. What fruit could that have? There must be a better way to deal with your disappointment.

This was a beautiful procession, and the San Diego police did a wonderful job in stopping traffic for us. For those that had to give up watching The S.D. Chargers vs. The Patriots to walk and pray with the Bishop and Our Lady of Fatima are most appropriately called "The Faithful". I think they plan to do it again next year. Hopefully we will have even more pro-lifers then. God Bless.

Many things were said about the late Bishop Juan Arzube on this Blog. However Bishop Arzube was I believe, the first Bishop to lead a procession, Mass, Rosary, and Benediction, in reparation for the sins of abortion, and he did so in the belly of the Beast, Hollywood, and on Sunset Blvd., and he did so for many years! on December 28, the Feast of the Holy Innocents! Max and Mary Ann, I know that bloggers here pray daily for Bishop Steinbock. We also pray for the Holy Spirit to send us a young loyal bishop who cares for all of his flock, even traditionalists. The history o Bishop Steinbock in the Fresno diocese is not good. Orthodox priest have been persecuted and errant priests have been protected. There is a priest shortage in the Fresno diocese and the current bishop has declined offers from religious orders who have offered priests to the diocese. The comments most make here are in no way meant as personal attacks. As a laymen in the Fresno diocese, I know there are many many suffering souls in this diocese and the current bishops turns his back to us. When we see Bishop like Bishop Cordileoni, we pray for a sheperd like like him, we pray hard.

Does anyone have the verse from St. Thomas Aquinas as to our responsibility to speak out when a Bishop/Priest is, shall we say out of whack. It would be good to print it as Thomas is often recognized as the greatest of the Doctors of our Faith. We need to get across that it is not so much critism of Bishops who refuse to be our Leaders, but FRUSTRATION with their lack of leadership and their concerns with political correctness in lieu of the proper teachings of the Gospels. Nothing we hear in a Homily remotely addresses the attacks we see every day on Jesus and his teachings, why is this? Most of them our in dire need of a Father Corapi Sermon.MGB

To imagine that 48 Million unborn baby children have been killed in America alone since abortion was legalized in 1973 in what is supposed to be a modern civilized country and world. Add to those massive numbers all the abortions performed world wide where it has been legalized staggers the imagination beyond all human logic or reason. May a God of love and mercy show mankind the errors of their ways and teach them to respect all human life from conception to a natural death.

Max Kolbe, is it charitable to assume that we don't pray for Bishop Steinbock? We do pray for him. But in justice, we must also point out that he has been virtually invisible on the pro-life scene. The fact that Bishop Cordileone's actions are even considered newsworthy speaks volumes about the inaction of many in our Church hierarchy.

No Gospel or Epistle, to my memory, instructs anyone to refrain from shining the light of Christ on an "out of whack" bishop or pope. What we read or hear sometimes is a false rendition of "scandal", as if the scandal is the exposure of sin; scandal is the sin, not the light of God exposing it to the world. So, what some scandalous people do is confuse the scandal with God, in an attempt to hide the scandal by bearing false witness against Jesus Christ, the Light Who shines in the darkness.

Papamac, here is what you want. Full text at http://www.newadvent.org/summa/3033.htm. Article 3: "I answer that, As stated above (1), correction is twofold. One is an act of charity, which seeks in a special way the recovery of an erring brother by means of a simple warning: such like correction belongs to anyone who has charity, be he subject or prelate." Article 4: "I answer that, A subject is not competent to administer to his prelate the correction which is an act of justice through the coercive nature of punishment: but the fraternal correction which is an act of charity is within the competency of everyone in respect of any person towards whom he is bound by charity, provided there be something in that person which requires correction."

Thankyou Bishop Cordileoni for your public witness with our Lady of Fatima for prayer and reparation. Our Lady is our greatest ally in our hope and prayer to end abortion.I would be in favor of this article becoming a prolife outreach for the NCCB conference of Bishops and their Prolife efforts.

This article about Bishop Cordileone has brought about so many postings of praise of the Bishop. I also salute him for his action. But I suspect that the praise would not be so lavish if his action were not so rare! This kind of act and leadership is what we ,the laity, have rarely seen, but have a right to expect, and an obligation to demand of our Bishops.

This is great news. Glory, praise, honor and thanksgiving to Almighty God for pastors like Bishop Cordilione. May Our Lady of Fatima protect him from all harm and give him more strenght to carry out his pastoral duties and lead so much more souls to Jesus Christ.

The faithful of San Diego are blessed. Here in Fresno there is a crime/gang problem out of control. Drive by shootings daily. Perhaps Bp. Steinbock would follow the lead from San Diego. Publicly appear at abortion clinics, process through gang areas, become part of the Church militant once again.

Papamac, Your in luck. It just so happens that we distribute it as part of our presentations to the poor souls who attend the indoctrination in heresy commonly called the Archdiocese of Los Angeles Religious Education Congress (Archdiocese of Lost Angels Religious Dis-Education Conflaguration)! Here it is: "It must be observed that if the faith were endangered, a subject ought to rebuke his prelate even publicly" St. Thomas Aquinas. Any one interested in helping us pass out these informative packages at the Congress is invited to contact me at: crcoa@dslextreme.com. God bless, yours in Their Hearts, Kenneth M. Where is our Cardinal in LA when it comes to pro life issues ???

Posted Thursday, January 31, 2008 10:48 PM By Kenneth M. Fisher
cjo, Our Cardinal in L.A. says Masses for, walks in processions, and poses for politically invaluable photo-ops with pro-abortion, pro-sodomite politicians. Oh, yes he has speakers who are pro-abortion speakers at his annual dissent fest, the Archdioceses of Los Angeles Religious Education Congress! Does this answer your question? God bless, yours in Their Hearts, Kenneth M. Fisher, Founder & Chairman Concerned Roman Catholics of America, Inc. www.crcoa.com
