“Unnecessary and possibly dangerous”

Watered down euthanasia bill seems sure bet for passage in state legislature

Catholic physicians and other doctors in California who oppose mercy killing would be forced to provide terminally ill patients with information on morally questionable “end-of-life care options” under a bill now pending in the state legislature.

The bill, AB 2747, is a repeatedly amended and watered down version of an original euthanasia measure sponsored by Assemblywoman Patty Berg, D-Eureka. Berg’s original bill, termed a “stealth assisted-suicide bill” by opponents, would have allowed doctors to administer “palliative sedation” to deliberately induce a coma, and to starve patients to death under a provision called “voluntary stopping of eating and drinking.” Also excised from the original bill was a provision requiring terminally ill patients to be referred to “Compassion & Choices,” a pro-euthanasia organization formerly known as the Hemlock Society.

The California Catholic Conference, the public policy arm of the state's bishops, lobbied hard against Berg’s bill and was instrumental in obtaining amendments that removed the most objectionable aspects of the measure. Still, the Catholic Conference remains opposed to the bill. “Amended version less egregious that previous, but still unnecessary and possibly dangerous,” says the Catholic Conference web site.

Under the bill now awaiting final legislative action, physicians would be required to inform terminally ill patients, among other things, that they have the “right of refusal or withdrawal from life-sustaining treatment.”

The bill’s official legislative title is the “California Right to Know End-of-Life Act of 2008,” although the Sacramento Bee described it in an Aug. 21 story as “right-to-die legislation.” The state Senate approved Berg’s bill on Aug. 20 by a vote of 21 to 17, and sent it back to the Assembly, where it originated, for concurrence in some minor changes. The Assembly is expected to approve the Senate’s amendments as early as next week and send the bill to the governor for his signature.

Sen. Sam Aanestad, R-Grass Valley, told the Bee that doctors who treat cancer patients have expressed opposition to Berg’s bill because they consider it government meddling at a time when patients need compassion. "What they don't need is another governmental intrusion into the relationship between themselves and their doctor," Aanestad told the newspaper. Worse, said Aanestad, requiring physicians to provide "a laundry list developed by Sacramento politicians" years before it might be necessary could lead depressed patients to make rash decisions and hasten their deaths before all possible treatments are tried, according to the Bee.

But Sen. Sheila Kuehl, D-Santa Monica, told the Sacramento newspaper that patients diagnosed with a terminal illness have the right to have their questions answered. "Right now, all too often, your questions are brushed aside," Kuehl told the Bee.

I cannot believe that is compassion for the dying that motivates this bill, but the same misplaced value put on the concept of freedom and utility which fuels the abortion debate.

This is an odd article considering the Catholic Church dropped its opposition to the bill weeks ago. Apparently this was never communicated to the author's attention.

Senator Aanestad remains opposed to this intrusion into the relationship between patients and the doctors they choose to care for them. He does not believe that the Legislature should dictate the medical care of terminally ill patients. Members of the California State Assembly may be contacted to voice your opinion on AB 2747: http://www.assembly.ca.gov/clerk/MEMBERINFORMATION/memberdir_1.asp The Governor may be contacted to request a veto of AB 2747: Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger State Capitol Building Sacramento, CA 95814 Phone: 916-445-2841 Fax: 916-558-3160 ( new number )

Soul-less judges 35 years ago opened the doors to legally murder our young without earthly personal consequences. (Most species of animals don't murder their young and they are lower on the intelligence chain -- at least supposedly). Now zombies in the California legislature are beginning a similar evolutionary process here to slowly attack and murder our elderly when they are considered a burden to society and of no value. If this passes, both sides of the candle representing human-life will be burning. How many generations will pass before the liberals go after the senior citizens? physically crippled? insane? mentally handicapped?, diabetics? or those whom can't survive without transplanted donor organs? If you don't want to suffer in your last days, that choice is yours, but don't allow them to impose it upon us! For those of you catholics whom still believe in hell and purgatory, I would much rather suffer in my last days on earth for the reparation of my sins, than suffer in purgatory which is far worse. Its true study catholic teachings. The choice is ours, we can keep re-electing these zombies to public office or we can oust (fire) them on the next election day and replace them with good pro-life legislators. Pray fervently to God your needs and that all christians put God's Will before their own. May Almighty God help us and teach us how to pray.

I can't imagine a worse thing to be told by my heretofore caring doctor, when laying weak and helpless in bed than, "you know, you have every right to kill yourself, if you want to". These politicians are totally evil, plain and simple.

There is a companion bill to this Berg bill. It has already been signed by the Governor, SB 1440. It creates the form to be used for the path to assisted suicide. I guess the governor wants to help the population controllers of this state to reduce budget expenses by reducing the people on whom the budget is to be spent. I'm glad to see that the CCC is opposing the Berg bill, but too bad they didn't also oppose AB 3000. AFter all it isn't as though they aren't being paid a salary to be an advocate for faith and morals.

No circumstances ever allow for any form of suicide called, in a lying way, "mercy killing" or "end of life options." Don't let the camel get its nose under the tent. Pray and fight to protect life in the public square.

The same church that covered up for child molesting priests now wants to lecture Californians on morality.

Zollman, you've got one hand on one hair on an elephant's tail while wearing blinders ... and you think you are describing the Church.

Let's add an amendment to this bill so that we can support wholeheartedly. We'll call it the "Right to Know End of Life and Fetal Life Bill" and we will require doctors to give information about end of life and end of fetal life so that all patients can make informed choices. Or are the proponents of this bill going to say that only women do NOT have the right to make an informed choice?
