How does Planned Parenthood explain this?

Rate of sexually-transmitted diseases soars among young Californians

A study published last month in the Californian Journal of Health Promotion reports that in 2005 there were 1.1 million new cases of sexually-transmitted infections among young people in California.

The 1.1 million figure is ten times higher than previously believed, and it means that in the 15-24 age group, diseases such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, HPV and HIV now infect almost one out of every four young Californians.

Is this because of a lack of sex-ed in the public schools? Apparently not. According to Chris Weinkopf, editorial-page editor of the Los Angeles Daily News, the California Department of Education reports that "96 percent of California school districts provide comprehensive sexual health education" and all California schools have been required to teach HIV/AIDS prevention education since 1992.

Can we blame the abstinence-only programs promoted by the Bush administration?
Not in California. Weinkopf notes that state law prohibits 'abstinence-only' education in the public schools. In addition, California may be the only state in the country that has refused to accept millions of federal dollars for abstinence education.

"This [soaring rate of sexually-transmitted infections] is no surprise," said Linda Klepacki, sexual health analyst for Focus on the Family Action in an online press release. "California has insisted on teaching contraceptive-based sex education in their schools all along. They expect teens to be sexually active. They don’t raise the health standard to abstinence… It's clear California supports sexually active teens, and STI rates will naturally explode with these policies."

Another factor in the out-of-control disease rates among California children and young adults may be the introduction of the “morning-after” pill. According to testimony offered to the FDA in 2004, sexually-transmitted infections soared in the British Isles when “Plan B” (the morning-after pill) was made available without prescription in 2000. Ignoring the warning signals from the UK, California subsequently became one of the first states to permit the sale of Plan B over-the-counter without an age limit. (Compiled testimony of Wendy Wright, Carole Denner, and Jill Stanek, "The Morning-After Pill: An Ill Wind This Way Blows.")

The new study on sexually-transmitted infections among young people in California was completed by the Center for Research on Adolescent Health and Development at the Public Health Institute in Oakland. Study author Dr. Petra Jerman told Medical News Today that the statistics revealed an epidemic of which, like an iceberg, only a small part is visible.

The authors acknowledged that their figures are underestimated because of incomplete screening of sexually active young people, and failure to confirm the effectiveness of treatment through follow-up testing.

Ed Thomas of OneNewsNow.com added another dimension to this distressing picture by reporting that a striking increase in suicide rates among people ages 10 to 24 has been confirmed by recently released statistics from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control .

At the same time, says Thomas, UCLA psychiatrist Dr. Miriam Grossman is convinced that promiscuity is the root cause of much depression. Dr. Grossman argues that the promiscuity-depression-suicide link is being ignored by doctors who fail to caution students against the documented self-destructive dangers rampant in the university’s sexual “hook-up” culture.

Our culture is all about sex. We are willing to endanger our children, kill our babies, break up our marriages, tolerate and celebrate sexual deviancy, use each other as objects of pleasure and lose our faith in order to support our sex habits. Almost every pop song sings of it, TV celebrates and laughs about it, porn shops peddle it and the internet provides constant access to it. Advertisers use it and abuse it. No wonder our churches are emptying. This culture is infested with sexual immorality and we Catholics had better start fighting it, and raising our children to be truly moral people, or another generation will be lost to satan. Look around and take stock of the situation - I'm afraid most good people have been lulled into complacency, and worn down by the constant attacks of the enemy. Pray the Rosary and Consecrate yourselves and your children to the Most Holy Virgin. In the end She will triumph, but we must join the battle. There is no time to lose...

They can't teach abstinence but they can use my tax payer dollars to help fund killing 4000 babies a day thru Planned Parenthood and to fund another program to try to prove homosexuality is "inherited", a myth that has been disproved from numerous studies. Children, K thru 12, are being brainwashed in schools to accept this disorder as "normal" behavior and parents have no say. Our country and children are being destroyed. Remember when we were told- it's OK as long as "they keep it in the privacy of their bedrooms"! It's a far cry from that!

There's no reason to suppose that, if we do nothing, things will get any better. Planned Parenthood and its allies in media and government will no doubt see this as a reason to intensify the promotion of sexual misconduct mislabeled "sex education" that has helped to produce this mess. Meanwhile, millions of our children, with the encouragement of our schools and our government, will embark upon a course of conduct that will leave many of them infected, sterile, dying, spiritually and psychologically wounded, or suicidal. When are we going to do something about this? Are we talking, even in our own families, church, and parish school, about the problem? Are we vigorously teaching the truth about sexual morality, and combatting the lies that dominate our culture? Are we recognizing the connection between our misuse of God's gift of sexuality and the growth of the culture of death that threatens to engulf us? We Catholics could do much to help if we are willing. We have thousands of pulpits, schools, and religious education programs. Most importantly, we have God's truth about life and love, which is both revealed in scripture and tradition and written in our human natures, and a rich theology of the body to explain it with. We are called to be salt, yeast, and light. Woe to us if we are not.

See what traditional and conservative parents have to be up against. While raising our children we need to be on top of everything and raise them up with family values and hope that we do a great job to give them tools to deal with the peer pressures of the secular society. Kids are exposed to sex ed at a very early age, they see/learn it in schools, moves, tv etc etc. It is not easy growing up in this time of day. Kids are even exposed to sex on the internet. In my opinion, we parents have a tougher job now a days trying to raise our children. We shouldn't make our kids live a sheltered life but we should protect their innocense as long as we can and give them tools to be street smart and tools to help build their character in Christ, to be children of great character in Christ. A life of virtues, a life where they can be happy here on earth until our Lord calls us home. We trust in our Lord for those blessings.

The "progressives" have made it possible for our society to "regress" to the Dark Ages with all its disease and sinfulness. We are no longer a civilized society. Sin of all shapes and sized is held up as the ideal while virtue and grace is laughed at and despised. The serpent returned to the garden and rules the roost, for now.

Dear Nomfundo .......When I was growing up ...... back in the 60's ........there were only 2 "venereal diseases".. now clled STD's or STI's ......and they were syphillis and gonorrhea ......... and some people were mortified to have pubic lice....... Now there's all that ...... plus about a dozen more ......... including chlamydia, human papilloma virus, and of course AIDS ....... Some of them have obvious symptoms ..... but even worse, others have no outward symptoms......... They silently make you sterile or set up long-term chronic degenerative diseases .......... but you don't notice it .......... while you're still unknowingly infecting others!........Here's the only really wise and healthy way to live ......Remain a virgin .... until you marry .......and then marry a virgin ........ or at least someone who has re-committed to purity .......... and has not recently been sexually promiscuous ..........This requires running with a good group of friends ...... good friends .......... .who are not trying to tempt each other sexually ....... It also requires a constant renewal of spiritual strength........ which can only come from God..... Pray for your friends .........Care for their well-being and always pray for them.

I think it would be a wonderful thing ........ if our Catholic hospitals and health care providers........ would ALL offer low-cost NFP training....... sexually transmitted infection testing and treatment.... pap smears....... annual exams ........ HIV/AIDS tests.......... pregnancy testing ...........extensive referrals ........chastity and relationship counseling .......so that nobody would ever be tempted to go to Planned Parenthood........ ever again!

Obviously Planned Parenthood has a terrible plan according to the horrible statistics quoted in this California Catholic Daily article that show California is not a place you ought to be. Plan a new plan asap!

A "sexual exposure chart" at a Catholic Answers related site, Jason Everett's Pure Love Club, defines exposure in these terms: "If every person has only the same number of 'partners' as you", (a girl having an 'average' number of 6 contacts is exposed to 63 other people, 20 contacts mushrooms into greater than 1 million - "When you are having sex with someone, you are having sex with everyone they and their partners have had sex with for the last 10 years" - former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop - potentially an underestimate, given the implications of environmentally caused disease inheritance over spans of generations discovered in the new scientific specialty of epigenomics). When are Catholics going to wake up and stop supporting the liberal democratic party? This abomination that supports abortion-on-demand, planned non-parenthood, homosexual activity, and any other form of sexual immorality they can get their hands on, and anything that will bring down the pure and God-given heterosexual family of procreation. I'm not even going into how they want to tax the living hell out of us so that both parents must work 10h/day and leave it to the communist public schools to raise their children, including their sex mis-education; that's for another forum. The LDC is the enemy of this country! Stop voting for them! Wake up!!!! God bless.

perhaps if people would stop repressing sexuality and treating it as a deviant or immoral behavior - and passing it on to their children this way, perhaps the promiscuity would decrease, ESPECIALLY among our youth. Not to mention that this begins with parenting, not the government. That being said, I absolutely do not believe in marriage and I absolutely do believe that sexuality is natural and acceptable, no matter what that sexuality is. You people need to get it together and stop blaming the liberals and instead come up with solutions that work - and hinthint, abstinence only ed is FAR less effective than safe-sex education. Why can't you just mind your own business and let the rest of us do what we want with our lives?! stay out of our bedrooms!

The mind-your-own-business response seems to be the most common one. Of course one cannot impose one's opinions on others, but articles such as this simply attempt to show readers all sides of the issue. They provide information and guidelines so you can judge your own choices about what you want to do with your life. Safe-sex education seems dangerous to me because it is so much more artificial to take pills that at the very least damage the biological systems of a woman than natural family planning or 'abstinence-only' guidelines. It sounds smart to say something like 'stay out of our bedrooms', but is that what the author is trying to do?
