“A little bit too dismissive”

Bishop Fabian Bruskewitz explains why there was no CCHD collection in his diocese this year

LINCOLN, Nebraska, November 24, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) -- Bishop Fabian Bruskewitz of Lincoln, Nebraska explained in an interview with LifeSiteNews.com today his reasons for dropping the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) collection in his diocese, saying that CCHD head Bishop Roger Morin was "a little bit too dismissive" of concerns brought against the organization.

Bishop Bruskewitz is one of five bishops confirmed so far to have chosen not to take up the collection this year for the national CCHD, the USCCB's domestic anti-poverty arm. The others included Bishop Victor Galeone of St. Augustine, Florida; Bishop John O. Barres of Allentown, Pennsylvania; Bishop Robert C. Morlino of Madison, Wisconsin; and Bishop Robert J. Baker of Birmingham, Alabama. In addition, at least three other U.S. bishops have called for reform of the CCHD.

"We question the ideology of [CCHD]," the bishop explained in the interview, "and ... we are shocked at the scandalous participation with the ACORN organization and also the participation with other organizations of questionable moral values or standards."

The organization came under fire in the months leading up to this past weekend's national collection due to reports documenting how numerous grantees have promoted or are promoting activities contrary to Church teaching, including abortion, contraception, and same-sex "marriage." In fact, the Reform CCHD Now coalition announced last week that $1.3 million is allocated to questionable groups. Additionally, critics have charged CCHD with favoring "left-leaning" groups in the spirit of infamous community organizer Saul Alinksy.

CCHD ceased funding ACORN (the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now), a liberal network of community activism groups, last year due to concerns about "financial management" and "political partisanship." CCHD had given ACORN over $7 million in grants during the previous ten years. ACORN came under renewed scrutiny this year after sting operations caught several ACORN offices condoning child prostitution and sex trafficking.

"It's so extremely controversial," the bishop said about CCHD. There have been "many negative resonances about it from people throughout the diocese and beyond the diocese," he said, adding that the "controversial character made it appear that [CCHD] was not effective" in meeting its purposes.
His diocese doesn't "rule [CCHD] out entirely," he said, but he would only reconsider the collection if there were "some changes in the organization itself, or its purposes, or its goals."

The collection "served very little purpose for us," he said, noting that the Lincoln diocese has not received funds from CCHD. "We do have a very extensive Catholic Social Services, St. Vincent de Paul activity here in the diocese," he said, "which supplies the needs of those who are impoverished, of those who need assistance to come out of poverty."

Bishop Roger Morin, chairman of the USCCB's subcommittee on the CCHD, delivered a passionate plea in defense of the organization at last week's USCCB plenary meeting. While pledging their commitment to ensure grantees' respect for Catholic teaching, he decried the "outrageous" allegations made by CCHD's critics that it funds pro-abortion or anti-family organizations.

But Bishop Bruskewitz expressed displeasure with Bishop Morin's report, saying the bishop did not adequately consider the criticisms brought against the CCHD.

"I didn't think [the report] took into account sufficiently the negatives that have been bantered about with regard to the organization," he said. He said Bishop Morin was "obviously defending the organization he had been involved in different areas," and now for which he's the chairman.

The report, further, "lacked some of the interests" that concerned people "have brought to the fore," he said. "I think he was perhaps a little bit too dismissive of them."

Nevertheless, he maintained that he has "no objection" to people supporting CCHD should they choose. If "people [who] like this organization ... want to send money to it, even from my diocese, they can," he said. "But I'm not going to take up the collection."

Bishop Bruskewitz has spoken up time after time at the annual bishops conference on controversial issues. He is my hero!

In the Diocese of San Diego the CCHD collection was taken up as usual. I attended Mass on Saturday evening and again on Sunday morning. I put an envelope into the second collection basket at each Mass containing a small paper stating my reasons for not contributing any money and asking that the Diocesan Office be notified.

Good for the Bishop Bruskewitz for calling Bishop Morin to task for his lack of oversight.

My money was withheld this year but will be put to good use supporting KSMH Catholic Radio. I suggest that those who refrained from giving to the CCHD could put the money to an orthodox purpose by supporting the KSMH radio pledge drive this week. Money is hard come by these days and to squander it on the ne'r do wells in the CCHD is a pity. Clean up your act, CCHD or starve for funds!

Now here is one of the bishops, Bishop Bruskewitz, who actually DOES something about the problems in the Church. God bless him!

My Archbishop, Chaput, must not have mandated this collection although I read where he defended it. No collection at my parish.

We support World Vison and St Vincent dePaul.SVdP is our local group that does such a good job and it is right here in our community.Political activision doesn't belong in the Church. Politics is the world's means of accomplishing the world's way.The Church and the world will be in conflict untill our Dear Lord returns in glory.Holy Spirit please guide our Church leaders.....

This public fighting is not good for the Church. Bishop B. comes across as hauty and arrogant.

MargieReilly has a great idea. Catholic Radio is doing such important evangelization. My CCHD dollars will go to Relevant Radio!

Finally, Bishop Bruskewitz and others are showing some backbone! In financially strapped times it makes even more sense to keep the charity money at home, in particular, at the parish level. Now is the time for Catholics in CA to withhold not only money for the CCHD but also for their diocesan fund until the CA bishops collapse the bishops' ultra-expensive political lobby---the CCC.

It's about time that someone in the Roman Catholic Church takes a stand against CCHD. Donations to ACORN are a waste of money. They should redirect the money to needed poverty organizations that are pro-Catholic and believe in our Catholic principles.

Posted Monday, November 30, 2009 12:03 PM By MarkF
The problem is not just that they gave money to ACORN. It's that they didn't see what was wrong with this organization first without it being pointed out to them. Anyone with eyes could see that this is a radical leftist bunch of con men and rogues. So they got rid of ACORN? Their eyes are still on radical, trouble making, hoodlum groups. Nothing has changed at CCHD. Defund the left!

On CCHD Sunday our priest described some of the errors of the CCHD and then set the collection baskets for them by the confessionals. God bless him.

Before he died, "First Things" editor Richard John Neuhaus said, don't give. I believe you always could count on Father Neuhaus' judgment on such matters.

Bishop Bruskewitz you are my hero. For years I have not given one red cent to the Human Development campaign. I got much of my info from the Cathoic World Report, thanks to Fr. Fessio. I am saddened to learn that 7 million dollars has been given to ACORN, the organization so Pro Abortion.

Bishop B. is my hero. I cannot believe that seven million has been given to Acorn over the years. I will need to see some hard facts on where my donation will be spent before I ever give to HHCD again.

Grisha. Your public rejection of Church Teaching is not good for the Church. Sakes alive! Imagine, you, the chief defender of making up your own Church rules that whitewash disordered behavior calling Bishop Bruskewitz haughty and arrogant!

Thank you good shepherd Bishop Bruskewitz, God bless you and Mary keep you faithful son of the Church.

Grisha, homosexuals and heretics and schismatics hate Bishop Bruskewitz. But the devout love him, and praise God for him.

Grisha, I personally know Bishop Bruskewitz, he is a very compassionate Bishop; however to you orthodox probably translates to "haughty(the proper spelling) and arrogant"! God bless, yours in Their Hearts, Kenneth M. Fisher

Since Stephanie Block of The Wanderer newspaper dis-closed so much about CHD years ago, I have not given a dime and have urged all I can to never give either. It is our good money and 'intentions to do good' that are turned to evil uses without our knowledge. We were easily duped. Today we CAN know. Listen, read and be fooled no more.

I wish my diocese had a Bishop Bruskewitz and to all those people who tell me that I have an obligation to support the Church and one of the commandment of the Church says so, I reply that I was taught that the obligation to support the Church says that I may support the Church in any way I choose and nobdy can tell me which organization I am "obliged" to support (I mean an organization within the Church).

Only a handful of vigilant Catholic bishops saw fit to publicly criticize the deceptive practices of the bureaucrats who control CCHD? This is a scandal. Our prelates are asleep at the wheel. I wish every Ordinary in the U.S. takes the time to personally research the policies and practices of CCHD and open his eyes. Unfortunately the stated mission of the CCHD (to fight poverty) is deceptive. Many of the grantees are not directly "fighting poverty" and helping the poor like St. Vincent the Paul or Gabriel Project ministries. Many of the funded orgs are professional agitators promoting class warfare, radical activists organizing protests and demonstrations, not to mention groups working directly or indirectly to get out the vote for political candidates who advocate and support morally reprehensible public policies antithetical to Catholic teachings, especially public funding of legalized abortion, acceptance of perversions like same sex unions who when elected vote to confirm like-minded high officials to the executive and judicial branches. CCHD needs a thorough overhaul and independent audit as in the case of the John Jay study on clergy abuse in America. The American bishops must hold themselves acccountable and come clean with CCHD. No more whitewashing and sweeping under the carpets the scandal of hundreds of millions of dollars being misused in the name of fighting poverty and the ongoing fleecing of the faithful in the pews. I would like to see CCHD funds go directly to help St. Vincent the Paul or similar ministries who deal with poverty and need at the parish ground level and also provide a more consistent model and funding for parish-based crisis pregnancy and pro-life centers within *every* parish. Let's get back to the principles of subsidiarity in practicing corporal works of mercy which our baptism calls us all to perform. Let's deal with corporal works of mercy at the parish level and stop delegating this responsibility to a bloated bureaucracy.

Kenneth: As I've said before, an orthodox Catholic is a baptized person who recites and believes the Creeds and the renewal of his baptismal promises.

Jesus teaches us that we (the Church) should give to God what is His and to Caesar what is his: But take a careful look, and notice that what we have today is the opposite. We find Caesar giving to the Church and the Church giving to abortionists, dissidents, homosexual organizers and communists. "He who has the gold makes the rules", and presently that is the government and putting the Church on its payroll.

OVER 30 YEARS AGO A GROUP OF MARXISTS MOVED INTO OUR PARISH. THE LEADER OF THE GROUP SEDUCED THE MOTHER SUPERIOR OF THE SCHOOL AND SHE LATER MARRIED HIM. THEY WERE RECIEVING $40,000 FROM CHD. I WROTE A LETTER TO ARCBISHOP LAGHI AND THE FUNDS WERE CUT OFF. I NEVER GIVE A DIME TO CHD.

Grisha, "belief" is a word that cannot stand alone, but requires action. Sitting around with the idea that one is orthodox by means of baptism and recitation of the Creed and baptismal promises does not a Catholic make ... not without living the creed, the promises, and the baptism. Baptism, eg, is the emergence of the soul rid of its sins. If the soul refuses to maintain this condition, then it is not orthodox.

"This public fighting is not good for the Church. Bishop B. comes across as hauty and arrogant. " Grisha, I don't get the same impression you get from the bishop's statements. That the CCHD has been controversial is beyond cavil. That money has been misused is beyond cavil. So the Bishop B. is within his rights to simply point these things out. And notice he has made it explicitly clear that he will reconsider CCHD in the future, when he is confident about its direction. And he is making sure the poor in his diocese are looked after. The other issue is the public fighting in the Church. I'm afraid that will continue until Christ returns. How many bishops supported D'Arcy at Notre Dame? Not the bishop of Santa Fe, who flatly opposed him. We have a divided episcopacy, and I only hope the discussions are not bitter, or characterized by haughtiness, or arrogance.

Grisha, "As I've said before, an orthodox Catholic is a baptized person who recites and believes the Creeds". Where does that leave you since you obviously reject the teachings of the Church on the grave sinfullness of homosexual sexual relations? God bless, yours in Their Hearts, Kenneth M. Fisher

God bless Bishop Bruskewitz. I wish every diocese had such a bishop. We can't seem to trust decisions being made with money in our diocese, so my donations will go to cause that I can trust - Catholic Radio.

Kenneth: Does this suit you better: "An orthodox Catholic is a baptized person who recites and believes the Creeds and the renewal of his baptismal promises, AND who agrees with Kenneth M. Fisher's approach to the pastrol care of homosexual persons and his interpetation of CCC 2358"?
