“No basis in reality”
Levada staying put as prefect of Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, says archdiocesan spokesman
In response to a report in the Italian daily La Repubblica that Cardinal Christoph Schönborn, Archbishop of Vienna, could become the new prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, a spokesman for the archdiocese has told Stephanscom Austrian Radio the rumor is unfounded.
On May 25, La Repubblica published an article by Marco Politi in which he offered a “general analysis” of the General Assembly of the Bishops’ Conference of Italy. Commenting on the rumor about Cardinal Schönborn, Politi said a personnel change at the Vatican was possible but that “until the Pope has signed off” on any changes, “everything is subject to question.”
The German daily Der Standard, picking up on the report in La Repubblica, said that if Cardinal Schönborn were to take the post, Cardinal William Levada, former Archbishop of San Francisco, would have to return to the United States.
In response to the speculation, Erich Leitenberger, spokesman for the Archdiocese of Vienna, said on May 27 that “the rumor has been brought up numerous times” and “has no basis in reality.”

That would be great news. Schonborn would be a much more articulate leader. I just finished his excellent book "Chance or Purpose". He gives lectures every Sunday. Levada was not of his stature in SF. Our new Arch is even weaker.

It will be dreadful if that Austrian cardinal get so important position.Have you been in St Stephan's Cathedral(Stephansdom) soon. The church is like part of an amusement park. You have to pay the veriest step in that church. You can't go near the altars(15 or more rows are separated with ropes. I felt myself like a 5 Euro banknote.

Dear Holy See: Please don't send Levada back!-------------- Someone on this site must know why Benedict would have promoted Levada in the first place?

I was shocked when Levada got to be head of the Holy Office. He should be sent back home to S.F. Schnborn would be a superb choice for prefect of CDF.

This wouldn't necessarily mean getting Cardinal Levada back to work in a diocese-- there are no shortage of paper-pushing jobs within the Curia... Cdl. Schonborn is the real deal in terms of orthodoxy-- don't forget who gave us the CCC.

I understood that Schonborn sanctioned the vile homosexual "Catholic art" somewhere in Europe a month or so ago. Dang.

The rumor, if true, may presage Levada to New York.

There is the possibility that Cdl Schonborn would become prefect of the CDF and Cdl Levada would be sent back to the U.S. to become archbishop of New York.

It would be better for Levada to stay there at this point. Schonborn is very homo friendly. This is very disturbing and raises questions about him personally, in my opinion.
Schonborn has a reputation of orthodoxy that he does not deserve. He is full of tricks and not to be trusted.
Levada is and was awful in Portland/S.F., but we pretty much know what he is going to do.

Nick, what examples of some of Schonborn's actions make you conclude that he's "homo friendly"?
