“The Holy Father's reflections on the central mysteries of our faith”
New book by pope to be published by San Francisco-based Ignatius Press
SAN FRANCISCO, July 29 /Christian Newswire -- Pope Benedict XVI's second volume of Jesus of Nazareth will be published in English by Ignatius Press, according to an agreement between Ignatius Press and the Vatican's Publishing House, Libreria Editrice Vaticana (LEV).
Slated for release in Spring 2011, the much anticipated second volume of Jesus of Nazareth takes up where the first volume left off.
"We are eagerly awaiting Volume II because it will contain the Holy Father's reflections on the central mysteries of our faith: the Passion, Death, and Resurrection," says Ignatius Press founder and editor, Jesuit Father Joseph Fessio. Fr. Fessio is a former student of Pope Benedict.
The second volume is expected to address such controversial questions as: who was responsible for Jesus' death? Did Jesus establish the Church to carry on his work? How did he view his suffering and death? How should we? And, most importantly, did Jesus really rise from the dead?
"Jesus remains controversial," notes Ignatius Press president Mark Brumley. "Christians believe he is the Son of God, the founder of the Church, and the Savior of the world. For non-Christians, Jesus is almost anything else -- a myth, a revolutionary, or a prophet whose teaching was misunderstood or distorted by his followers."
Benedict XVI insists Jesus is the Son of God, yet the pope acknowledges that opinion is divided. He brings readers face-to-face with the challenge of Jesus. What to make of a real man who taught and acted in ways tantamount to claims of divine authority? Believers and unbelievers alike must come to their own judgment about Jesus and what he means for them. The second volume of Jesus of Nazareth will help them to do so.
Ignatius Press is the primary English-language publisher of the works of Pope Benedict XVI/Joseph Ratzinger. Benedict XVI was elected pope on April 19, 2005, becoming the 264th successor of Peter as the Vicar of Christ. Born Joseph Ratzinger, he was for over two decades the head of the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith under Pope John Paul II and the president of the Pontifical Biblical Commission. A world-renowned theologian, Ratzinger was a theological expert at the Second Vatican Council, and in the years following the council he was one of its prime interpreters. He is probably the most accomplished theologian to be elected pope in modern times.

I admire our pope so much. He was looking forward to a relaxing retirement so he could do what he does best and that is write. He did not want to be pope but accepted the position because it was God's will. Non-Catholics think the pope has a "god"-like position where he is adorned with beautiful clothes and is surrounded by works of art. I'm sure our pope would be much more comfortable wearing casual clothes and living in a tiny cell. God bless Pope Benedict! His daily life must be like living the "Agony in the Garden". All the sins and problems of the world are his agony and cross. This second book will surely be divinely inspired.

AS SOON AS CATHOLICS REALIZE THAT THE CONGREGATION FOR THE DOCTRINE OF THE FAITH IS INTIMATELY RELATED TO THE SO-CALLED "INFAMOUS" INQUISITION-WHICH IS STILL ALIVE AND WELL IN THE CHURCH, AS IT SHOULD BE---WE CAN EXPECT A HUGE FLURRY OF INTEREST IN A RELATED BOOK ON THAT SUBJECT ALONE--FROM MANY, MANY SOURCES WHICH WILL CLAIM TO HAVE EXCLUSIVE TRUTHS. AT LEAST, IT CAN BE EXPECTED FROM THOSE WHO WANT TO SEE THE CHURCH CONNECTED IN ANY WAY TO TORTURE, BURNING AT THE STAKE, AND RELATED INTERESTING SUBJECTS. IN THE END WE SHOULD EXPECT QUITE AN ENLIGHTENMENT---IF IT EVER ENDS-THE CONTROVERSERY, I MEAN, NOT THE ENLIGHTENMENT!!! THE ENLIGHTENMENT IS ACTUALLY QUITE SHORT AND CONCISE. ALSO TRUE.

Two very, very fine men, and great priests! The Society of Jesus is fortunate to have Fr. Fessio among it's ranks! May JESUS of Nazareth continue to guide the Holy Father!!

@Nutune the so called "enlightenment" is awashed in as much if not more blood than the Holy Office of the Inquisition. 500,000 Vendee who defended altar and throne were massacred by the enlightened French revolutionaries and it can argued the so called "enlightenment" lead to Karl Marx and the wonderful world of communism which swallowed over 100 million souls in the 20th century

Canisius-Thank you for reminding me of yet ANOTHER bloody era-although MY use of the word, "enlightenment" referred only to a possible INCORRECT parallel to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. If I may enlarge my definition, my intent was to show the following; "An educated, enlightened truth to the usual CONFLICT with the truth (as exemplified by the horrors of POLITICAL manipulation seen in the infamous "Spanish Inquisition" emplaced by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella) can really be seen in a concise argument." I have anticipated that something PURPOSEFULLY incorrect will be made of the Holy Father's having been head of the CDF just before succeeeding John Paul ll the Great! I sincerely hope that I was wrong in saying that it may even be "possible"!

Canisius,
Please don't forget the thousands of Recalcitrants in the British Iles and other countries who also lost their lives for the Faith as a result of the so called "Enlightenment"!
God bless, yours in Their Hearts,
Kenneth M. Fisher

THE HOLY FATHER has been under such "uninformed" attacks recently, that I really had feared that the antiquated misunderstanding of the Inquisition- (which was first formed by Pope Gregory IX (1227-41) and continued to "inquire" into any possible heresies connected to the Church's dogmas)-would be regurgitated again. It seems that anything connected to the Holy Father is "suspect" and the attacks are sickening to those who are in a position to know the truth. It has not been many years since old-timers (people like NUTUNE) had to inform themselves of some rather complicated history to straighten out the defamers of the Church. Like past attacks, the attacks of today will probably only REINFORCE the Church, which will remain a source of love and strength for all of us.

May God bless Pope Benedict XVI and Father Fessio on this Memorial Day of St. Ignatius of Loyola. May Fr. Fessio remain truly faithful to the Lord Jesus, to St. Ignatius and to the Holy Father Benedict. My prayers are with him and his order, and I hope he prays for all of us too.

Jesus demands complete emotional control. Anger is as damning as murder, lust in the heart, as adultery. One must avoid judging others and must forgive all apparent wrongs 70 x 7 times. "Be ye perfect, even as your heavenly Father is perfect" (Matt. 5:48). Complete trust is to be placed in Jesus and through Jesus in God alone.

Steven, there is such a thing as justified or holy anger. Christ got angry when the Temple was being misused. St. Paul got angry at the sins of some of flock, but he gave a just punishment and did not sin. Also, in 1 Corinthians 11: 1, St. Paul says, "Be ye followers of me , as I also am of Christ." That is the sense that I meant Fr. Fessio should be faithful to the founder of his order, St. Ignatius of Loyola. He should be loyal to the Holy Father, the Pope, in everything but sin, too, since the Pope sits in the seat of Christ on earth (Matthew 16:18, Thou art Peter and upon this rock (note: rock, not stone in the original language it was written) I will build my Church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it). Evidently you do not believe that. Please do not quote to me the Bible since it was the Church that decided what would go into the New Testament. Without the Church, there would be no New Testament. Even the Bible says that the Church is the pillar and mainstay of the truth -- 1 Timothy 3:15. And please do not tell me not to call the Pope the Holy Father. Well instructed Catholics know that Jesus Christ was using hyperbole when he said not to call anyone father. He meant that we should recognize that all fatherhood comes from God the Father, and fathers should try to mirror his virtues with the graces from above. The word father was used all through the New Testament, and even St. Paul said he was a "father" to his flock. (! Corinthians 4:14-15). St. Steven also called the the Jewish leaders "Fathers", Acts 7:2. There are many, many other such references including when St. Paul calls Titus his son in the Faith, Titus 1:4.

Steven, although you did not mention all those things in your post of August 2, 2010 at 4:08 p.m., as a convert, and I think you are a Protestant, I knew where your post was heading.

"By Steven Jesus demands complete emotional control. Anger is as damning as murder": Nay, this idea reveals a clueless mind and heart. Jesus whipped people and wrecked their stuff when they offended Him. Jesus destroyed an olive tree for failing to produce fruit. Jesus tells us that anyone who abuses a child is better off being drowned. Jesus destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah and their encompassed towns, hamlets and villages. We are to fear the Lord God, and this is not done when we perceive Him as a "happy face", full of giggles and nuggies. Those who preach against anger are hypocrites because they are suppressing their anger. Lastly, Steven exhibits an abject comprehension that Jesus is in fact God ... notice his slip of the keyboard when he says "and through Jesus in God alone"? Steven, you are not even Protestant, for the Protestants believe that Jesus is God. Keep posting and your actual religion will become apparent. At this point it looks something like maybe a dualism type religion, and not Trinitarian. How many times have we heard people say, "Mary, Jesus, and God"? Which heresy does this speak for? But Steven may not be a heretic, but rather someone moving from a distant glimpse of Christianity towards God. What is required of Steven is to use Scripture to learn Truth and not for the purpose of aggrandizing yourself.

Regarding my last post to Steven, I should have said, "I knew where your post was PROBABLY heading. That might not necessarily have been his intention. JLS, might be right in his post of Aug. 3 at 10:46. Anyway keep reading, Steven, you might learn something, and if I misjudged your intentions, I apologize.
