Chico man arrested on assault charges after allegedly trying to run down sidewalk counselor with vehicle outside Planned Parenthood facility
A Chico man is facing charges of assault with a deadly weapon after allegedly trying to run down a sidewalk counselor with an SUV outside a Planned Parenthood abortion center in Chico.
 Police said Matthew Reid Haver, 40, of Chico was charged with assault and other lesser crimes, including driving with a suspended license and using license plates from another vehicle on the SUV he used during the Wednesday, June 24 incident. The man Haver allegedly tried to run down was able to jump out of the way and was not seriously hurt, police said.
“According to witness statements gathered by police, Haver allegedly tried to strike 60-year-old protestor James Canfield with a 1991 GMC sports utility vehicle at the Planned Parenthood office on Vallombrosa Avenue,” reported the Paradise Post. “Canfield moved out of the way and was not seriously injured during the incident, but clearly shaken by the experience, Chico Police Lt. John Carrillo said.”
With the help of witnesses, who took down the license plate number of the SUV, a Chico police officer was able to identify the suspect and track down his address, the newspaper reported. “Officers detained, interviewed, and arrested Haver at his home,” said the Post. “Haver was transported to the Chico Police Department Holding Facility for prisoner intake. At the holding facility, however, Haver had a medical emergency which required him to be transferred to Enloe Medical Center for treatment.”
Police would not give details of the “medical emergency,” but said it required them to call an ambulance, the Post reported. “Officers decided the best course of action would be to release Haver on a citation to appear in court. Had the medical emergency not occurred, Haver would have been booked in the Butte County Jail,” said the newspaper.
Canfield is a regular sidewalk counselor outside the Planned Parenthood facility and at another abortion center in Chico, the Women's Health Center, just across the street from the police department, according to the Post.
“He (Canfield) reportedly has a large sign with a graphic photo of an aborted fetus, and it receives attention as people drive by,” said the Post story. “The investigation revealed that Haver had a child with him in the vehicle, and as they drove by the demonstration, the child asked what was on the sign.”
Lt. Carrillo, the Post reported, “said it appears Haver became enraged over the picture of the aborted fetus, lost control of his emotions and tried to strike Canfield with his vehicle.”

Authorities need to take away the child Haver had with him in his SUV when he tried to kill Mr. Canfield. Not only did he physically endanger the child, a person attempting to murder an innocent human being exercising his right to keep people from murdering an inconvenient child is putting that child through serious psychological trauma and must be an unfit caretaker for the child. By what logic a man like this is enraged by a picture of an aborted baby to the point of wanting to kill someone trying to protect other unborn children, I honestly do not understand. He apparently prefers to exist in denial and become enraged at people who want to display a photograph of one murdered baby in order to help save other babies by changing hearts and minds. We must pray for those who support babycide, that their hearts will ultimately turn towards the light.

Not surprised, violence against pro-lifers is on the increase but where is their protection from Washington???

Another example of the violent actions taken against pro-life people because of their efforts to provide the truth about what abortion really is. Of course, the media loves to dwell on the death of abortionist Tiller as an example of how violent pro-life people are (even though the alleged killer was not known as being pro-life). If Mr. Canfield had tried to run over an abortionist, this would have made the front pages of every paper in California - maybe further.

This is just one of the many incidents that prolifers have endured over the years. Often, we do not report them. Within the last two weeks, I was assaulted at a local abortion clinic when an enraged "dad" threw an object at my head. I ducked. It missed. The cops were not called. Before he threw what I thought was a rock, he had threatened another prolife man with the following: "How would you like a fat lip?"
Then, he turned his rage upon me. I chose to leave since the prolifers were not going to phone the police and I judged the man to be deranged and possibly dangerous. This morning at mass, one of my friends who was there reported that this same man came out the far driveway and accepted a rosary from him. God be praised!
And yes, it can be dangerous out there if one is not very careful. The rage and anger of those who would kill their own child in the womb is very real. Pray for them.

Given the obvious pre-meditation (Switching the plates), he should have been charged with attempted murder! In addition, he committed felony child abuse by having a child in his car during the commission of a felony! He should have also been charged with leaving the scene of an accident! Finally, how in the world do they get away with allowing a suspected felon to leave with just a ticket? (ADW and child abuse are BOTH felonies! Leaving the scene should also be a felony!) It is even more insane once you look at his record! This guy is a criminal, pure and simple! The obvious police bias is too much!
If this had happened to an employee of the abortion clinic, the response would have been VERY different! They would have had a news conference and nailed the offender publicly in an attempt to slander the pro-life movement!!

Richard Flores, I agree. But I looked at his record on pipl and all I found was a 1986 misdemeanor for minor in possession of alcohol. That doesn't exactly correlate with Baby Face Nelson. In some counties the superior court records are open to the public online.

Cutting a baby from the womb, or running someone down with a car, both are murder and cannot be tolerated. For your next ProLife Action, May I suggest: (1) Invite the press to your next ProLife Action. This is the way to keep in the public eye. (2) Let the local police know what time you will be out there and how long your ProLife Action will take. This way the local authorities will keep a special eye out for trouble makers. (3) Video tape your own ProLife Actions. It might get expensive but, in this case, you would have had hard evidence to present to the press, or even in court. Also, people act more respectfully when they know they are on camera and might be more willing to listen to your message. Remember, Our Mission Is To Save Lives &, If Lucky, Mabye Even Souls.
