Catholic Bishops Launch National Campaign

To Defeat Pro-Abortion Health Care

Editor- the following story is from LifeSiteNews website

With the latest version of the health care reform legislation from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi containing massive abortion subsidies and mandates, the nation's Catholic bishops have launched what they say is their biggest legislative campaign ever. In an extraordinary call to Catholics to prevent health care reform from being derailed by the abortion lobby, the United Sates Conference of Catholic Bishops has sent bulletin inserts to almost 19,000 Catholic churches across the country. "Health care reform should be about saving lives, not destroying them," the insert states. It urges readers to contact congressional leaders so they support efforts to "incorporate longstanding policies against abortion funding and in favor of conscience rights" in health reform legislation. "If these serious concerns are not addressed, the final bill should be opposed," it adds. The insert highlights the Stupak Amendment from Rep. Bart Stupak a pro-life Michigan Democrat, and says it "addresses essential pro-life concerns on abortion funding and conscience rights."

Congratulations to our bishops for prodding our priest's and practicing Catholic's consciences to vote as a pro life not death people. The sledding is rough when our elected baptized Catholics bow down to money and influence.

Yeah there are Islamic terrorists, yeah there are atheists, yeah there are fundamentalists. But you know what is worse and what really scares me...Lukewarm Catholics.

I totally agree with Ron. The bishops have been totally out to lunch for quite a long time. Don't bother to contact Feinstein and Boxer, they are totally all for so called "choice". Remember to vote them both out next time they run. I think Boxer will be running in 2010. Mark you 2010 calendar for November and don't forget to vote.

It's interesting that suddenly the bishops are speaking out when they've been putting up with abortion under the guise of "D&C" in Catholic hospitals for decades. The majority of abortions in this country are paid for by employer health plans. Have the bishops ever said one single word to the corporations of America that support and sponsor abortion through their employee health coverage? Does part of YOUR paycheck go to support abortion? Just like in the Notre Dame situation, the bishops past IN-action makes them look like partisan hacks and thus, easily dismissed.

Stupak may be out for the rest of the week due to the death of his mother-in-law. Watch, I almost guarantee that the weasel Speaker will try to get around his amendment while he is gone. Please pray for Stupak, for his loss, he's a good man (who could have thought of such a thing: a staunch pro-life DEMOCRAT?!) and that the abortion funding fails; in fact, pray this entire so called healthcare reform (that has zero reforming in it) FLOPS such that it's failure wll be where failure on an even greater scale that the Clintons' attempt in the 1990's, so they'll have to but out in such matters that are NOT constitutional, just like this power grab health care takeover.

LET'S DON'T WITHDRAW OUR SUPPORT WHEN THE COUNCIL DOES GOOD. SURE, THEY WERE LESS THAN UPSTANDING (AND I'M SURE THEY KNEW WHAT WE WERE SAYING)-BUT THEY ARE ON THE RIGHT TRACK NOW!

I’m sorry, please correct me if I am wrong, but an “insert flier” in the bulletin is the bishop’s answer to this? Again, correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the vote on this socialist health care bill which contains taxpayer funded abortion is probably going to be voted on this week. Isn’t this coming Sunday “after” the vote? Way to go bishops! “Leaders” are supposed to be proactive, not reactive. I could see if this came out of nowhere and blindsided us, but that is not the case. At this point all the bishops should be publicly contacting each and every Catholic politician and warning them that if they vote for any bill that promotes abortion, especially this bill, they will be excommunicated from the Church. After 35 years and over 50 million abortions this is their answer, an “insert flier” in the church bulletin?

Better late than never, I guess. I just hope Pelosi is informed of the bishops' action and that she will be excommunicated if she goes through with the 1990-page abomination that will be her millstone around the neck.

"Talk about closing the barn door after the cows get out!! Kinda late don't ya think!!! " Ron, my sentiments exactly. Now if all the bishops had gotten on board, say 40 years ago when the rejection of Humanae Vitae indicated a strong cultural shift toward the abortion movement, one might take heart. But when the most pro-abortion president in history received his laurels from Notre Dame, how many princes of the church joined together in protest? It is hard for me to take the USCCB seriously.

WOODY: "...on the right track". I don't think so. It appears they are on the side track watching the "Pelosi Express" roll right by on the main track. They are just shouting at the conductor. Maybe the bishops can reorganize and support campaigns against all representatives and senators who vote for the health care bill; and don,t wait untill the next election day, start the day after the president signs the bill.

Where were the California catholic bishops durign the last election? Where they licking envelopes at Obama headquarters? They talk the talk but they do not walk the walk. Again, they speak and nobody listens. Those of us in the pro-life movement have been alone and will be alone. All of the sudden they realize the Obomination is all about the culture of death? PPPPlease.

How effective will this "vigorous" effort by the bishops be? It depends on how many people in the pews will contact their legislators and ask them to make sure there is language inserted to prevent government funding of abortion. That, in turn, depends on how much encouragement pastors and other parish leaders give their congregations. A few will try hard. But since many pastors never seem give the issue any thought at all, others are scared of the IRS or the ACLU, and still others are covertly pro-abortion, it is hard to muster much optimism. The stark reality is the rank and file of our religious leadership do not take the abortion issue seriously. Given that, it is hard to see how they will persuade their congregations to take it seriously. But God is all-powerful. Perhaps we are at last witnessing the sleeping giant waking. Let us pray it is so.

Great message Eric! I am so infuriated with Pelosi,...she is really hard to take.. I belong to the Oregon Patriots...a good site to sign petitions and keep up on the DC evil ones! Go to the National one if interested and join..they are going for an impeachment petition , we really need to get the crooks out!

Maybe they have to make a show for the Pope. Let's see if they actually accomplish something.

When are the bishops going to get serious about backing the Vatican's directivfe to deny communion to ALL pro-abortion politicians? It is LONG past due! If they had done their job four years ago, none of this would be an issue! They are at fault for the inclusion of abortion in the first place by failing to address this at the beginning when the were openly warned about Obama's dishonest behavior and inclusion of unrestricted abortion funding!

Personally,I view this as a "no lose"political move by their collective Exellencies in an attempt to improve the deservedly dismal image many Catholics have of the USCCB. If the bill goes down they can claim they were responsible for the defeat. If it gets passed--they can claim, "We tried!" Either way, they win! That,JLS,in my opinion,is all they mean to acomplish. Can't miss !!! Is it not wonderful to live in a country just filled with such champions of orthodoxy?....yeh,right.

Posted Thursday, November 05, 2009 6:21 AM By JLS
Speaking about champions of orthodoxy, the USCCB is more like a hydra or knitting circle than a font of leadership.I have notice that some bishops say that they rule their own dioceses and that the USCCB does not. Thus we find that some bishops know what is right and attempt to do so, instead of play this "hot potato" game. Shuffling the responsibility around by bypassing the the authority of the papacy is not only dishonest but defiant of the hierarchical nature of the Church. Real episcopal unity does not require committees, but only that each bishop do the right thing. they are given the charism of speaking for God, thus giving over this authority to a group they simply are throwing their pearls before swine to be trampled.

TheUSCCB should start by having their Bishops instruct the pastors in their diocese about what Planned Parenthood is and what they do. Then this information should be passed along to the average Catholic sitting in the pews. If you took a poll, you would find that most pastors and parishioners do not have a clue as to what Planned Parenthood is about or what they do. Does anyone have any idea as to how much money PP receives from governmental agencies. This whole agrument will be corrected when people have information about what abortion is....and the evil it perpetuates. It maybe unpleasant to hear but the truth will set you free. Pastors are afraid of offending the parishioners who do not want to hear anything unpleasant. Information is empowering and it needs to start at the local level and for most Catholics this is their parish church and pastor.

If pastors are afraid of offending parishioners, then what business do they have of being pastors or even Catholics? It is called idolatry.
