What makes driving to this church worthwhile? It seems that St. Joseph's should be avoided, as should all new masses within the jurisdiction of Bishop "Stand Up When Christ is Present" Blaire.

I agree with St. Christopher. I wouldn't waste my time. I'm not interested in a "standard new Mass".

Yes, St. Joseph's is a most inviting and welcome site for skiers. Fr. Dachauer's orthodox and clear homilies are worth the drive. And the locals have a strong faith that can move mountains.

The cosmetic change in the headline of this thread does nothing to prevent such sniping as that of S. Christopher. The problem? Here, in S. Christopher, we have a layman who issues an UKASE against Catholics who desire to attend -- and certainly do attend -- the Mass of the Novus Ordo within the jurisdiction of Bishop Blair. For example, S. Christopher claims that at Mammoth Lake, St. Joseph's Church "SHOULD BE AVOIDED (emphasis mine)." And what are we told next? Folks, while you are busy avoiding this fine church and its perfectly valid Mass, go one step further and enroll yourself in a general strike against all Masses of the Novus Ordo in Bishop Blair's Diocese. That, ladies and gentlemen, is the what the UKASE of blogger S. Christopher insists upon. Let's, then, for a moment, pause to think. Since the Eucharistic Christ is Really and Personally present in the Mass of the Novus Ordo, one can appreciate the enormity of S. Christopher's call for a general strike against these Masses. If he promotes this strike in the name of the traditional Latin Mass, he is taking the name of the traditional Latin Mass in vain. As Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre pointed out, the Mass of the Novus Ordo, in itself, is a valid Mass. The Eucharistic Christ is indeed really present in the Mass of the Novus Ordo, its liturgical deficiencies notwithstanding. ~ Compare blogger S. Christopher. S. Christopher, knee-deep in confusion, gives himself permission to call for a Diocesan-wide strike against the Eucharistic Christ. Worse: the CCD editor gives himself permission to publish S. Christopher's UKASE.

Thanks, but i'll pass, just think if the Traditional Latin Mass was said, how many people such as out of town skiers would be expoused to the MASS OF ALL TIMES?? Besides tabernacle not front and center, NO Mass and the Stockton bishop says the people have to stand after recieving the body of Our Lord Jesus Christ, once again with all do respect no thanks.

Sad testimony to the times that Catholics must search for a worthy Mass or a worthwhile priest or even an okay Church.

Here is a list of what occurs in the "standard new Mass" that precludes me driving to it: 1. Altar girls, 2. Extraordinary Eucharistic Ministers, 3. Concelebration (with the shortage of priests, why the extra priests at one Mass?), 4. Communion in the hand, 5. Standing when receiving Communion, 6. Sermons that dodge orthodox Catholic dogma, 7. The "Sign of Peace", and last but not least: 8. "...for all men..." instead to the correct translation of the Latin "...pro Multis (for many)" during the consecration. #8 is being corrected courtesy of His Holiness our supreme Pontiff.

When I could still ski, I am now handicapped, I would go to St. Joseph's for Mass on Sundays and during the week. During the week, the Masses were celebrated in the Parish House.
I have never experienced anything but a devotional Mass at this parish, at least as devotional as a Norvos Ordo Mass can be, that is.
God bless, yours in Their Hearts,
Kenneth M. Fisher

I have some Pro's and Con's about this parish. I like the Mass schedule. Morning Mass Monday thru Saturday. Saturday morning Mass has Traditionaly been dedicated to Our Lady. It's rare nowadays to find a Sat. morning Mass. In August an Eastern Rite Bishop. Great if he says the Eastern Rite Divine Liturgy. I'm not a fan of contemporary art.
So the church building is like a, What is it!? "Standard popular church music" Is it traditional or the banal happy clappy kind? Recorded music for Mass has been prohibited by Rome. Standing for parts of Mass when it is more fitting to kneel. Thats a big turnoff! Fr. Dachauer has been asked to step down, is this a routine transfer? Or is Fr. Dachauer doing something right, that the Bishop feels he must put an end to?

Fr. Dachauer is 80 years-old. His Jesuit provincial needs him to retire to the Jesuit house in Los Gatos so they can care for him. Bishop Blaire has graciously welcomed Fr. Andy's ministry for well past the mandatory retirement age. We'll all miss Fr. Andy.

I stumbled upon this web site seeking information regarding Fr. Andy Dachauer's retirement. I was shocked to read diatribes by so called Catholics attacking our fellow brothers in Christ! For over 20 years our family has vacationed for a week or more at Mammoth Lakes during the summer. We would consider our vacation incomplete without attending Mass at St.Joseph's and the parish picnic. Fr.Andy's homilies are reverant, relevant and inspirational. The weekend masses are packed to capacity with vacationers. Most of my Protestant friends are amazed we attend Mass while on vacation. The Masses are packed at St.Joseph's clearly due to Fr.Andy's commanding stature and of course the Mass itself. For those who feel uncomfortable with new refinements let them find a faith outside the Body of Christ.
